Des Kanben Wunderhorn composed between 1888 and 1898 by Mahler are setting of German folk poems assembled by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Bretano. In those songs, Mahler covered a vast range of subjects and emotions, such as wishful romances, satirical parables, and harsh deaths of soldiers. Renowned conductor, Shaochia Lü, once said: “Listeners wanting a good appreciation of Mahler may enjoy exploring his song cycle Des Knaben Wundehorn for the most direct understanding of Mahler’s art. It is the lifelong fountainhead of Mahler’s inspiration. He not only wrote songs for the masses, bu all his symphonic works as well, are charged with elements Des Knaben Wunderhorn.”
After an acclaimed concert in 2020, Baoyi BI, the mezzo-soprano and the Japanese pianist Kaori Kitamura will return to the Mountain View Theater with baritone Songhu LIU, who is the first solo singer in residence at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Together they will interpreter the spiritual world of Mahler.
