Just as Beethoven was winning a reputation as the leading composer in Vienna, he was faced with probably the worst fate for a musician: a progressive hearing loss and later complete deaf. But he resolved to persevere. The crisis marked a major turning point in his musical style: he embodied in music the eternal struggle between darkness and light, despair and victory. He proved that music could be heroic. The two concerts start with Beethoven’s most famous String Quartet pieces from his “heroic period”, then his late period work the Op. 130, and end with the work of his successor Johannes Brahms, too see how Beethoven truly changed the course of history.
